OSET Cup Cheshire Cup 2016 Round 1

The first round of the 2016 Cheshire Oset Cup got underway in great conditions at the Mouldsworth sand quarry near Chester on Sunday March 6th. Three routes were marked out for novice, inter and expert classes using the sand banks and rock faces of the quarry.

Kieran Skehan, the 2015 expert champion, started as he means to go on by winning the expert class, a solitary dab the only blot on his scorecard. The ever improving Stefan Jones followed on 24 marks. Will Hughes, stepped up to the hardest route well and completed the podium on 42 marks. Alfie Hoyles and Connall Wilcock adapted well to their first expert route experience.

The C class intermediate winner, was a newcomer to the class, stepping up from Novice Dylan Ratcliffe completed the trial on just 2 marks. Perhaps a double move to the expert class could be on the cards. Dan Douglas and Gethin Beech-Jones followed on 8 marks with Dan taking second place with the greater number of cleans.

Aidan Williams took the win in C class novice on 6 marks. James Wyatt showed great improvement, taking up trials late last year, finishing in second on sunday with a 9 mark drop. Keeva Wilcock completed the podium in her first trial.

The D class intermediates has been ransacked by riders moving up from last year’s novice championship. Joe Powell had a fantastic ride, losing just 8 marks to take the win. Oliver Arkwright had his first podium in Cheshire, another big improver during 2015, finishing in second place on 17 marks level with Joe Chard but taking the result on greater number of cleans. Jess Widdowson suffered the cameraman’s curse, after three brilliant cleans on the rocky turn of section one the camera came out to record a costly 5 (sorry Jess!) this dropped Jess from second place to fifth. In fact the class looks set to be a close one with just 14 marks covering 6th to 14th place.

The D class Powell whitewash was completed by Milly Powell taking her maiden victory on 12 marks (big brother Joe won the Intermediates of the same age group). Charlie Skehan was proud of himself, and so he should be, finishing in second place on 16 marks. Toby Tyson completed the podium chased by trials newcomer Joe Stubbings.

Youngster Oliver Critchley won the E class novices with a determined ride.

The series now takes pace with Round 2 on the horizon, the venue is yet to be confirmed for the event on April 10th.
